View OriginalChainThink report, on September 30, less than 48 hours before the October 1 deadline for a U.S. government shutdown, Trump held talks with leaders of both chambers of Congress, but no progress was made on issues such as the Democratic Party's demand to extend medical subsidies and repeal cuts to the Medicaid program in the tax legislation signed by Trump earlier this year.
Vice President Vance stated that the U.S. government is "heading toward a shutdown," and if no agreement is reached, hundreds of thousands of civil servants will face furloughs, and key economic data releases will also be affected.
Vance tried to blame the Democrats. "I think we are heading toward a shutdown because the Democrats are unwilling to do the right thing. I hope they change their minds, let's wait and see." Senator Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader in the Senate, said after the meeting: "If the president accepts some of our demands, he can avoid a shutdown, but there are still significant differences between us. We believe these issues regarding healthcare and the reversal of funding align with the interests of the American people." John Thune, the Republican majority leader in the Senate, said that the Democrats' refusal to approve a short-term spending bill to keep the government running until November 21 amounts to "hostage-taking," but he also stated that he would continue discussions with the Democrats after dealing with the current funding deadline.
A U.S. government shutdown would delay the release of key economic indicators (including the nonfarm payrolls monthly employment report scheduled for Friday) and at least temporarily furlough hundreds of thousands of federal employees, while other government employees would have to continue providing essential services without pay. The Bureau of Labor Statistics announced on Monday that it would not release economic data during a potential shutdown. Trump threatened that if the government shuts down, he would carry out large-scale permanent layoffs of federal employees. If the shutdown occurs, it would be the first U.S. government shutdown since 2018-2019, when government funding ran out for five weeks during Trump's first term, including during New Year's Day.
